    module #6
Although I feel I have made many accomplishments in tutoring and working with children, the accomplishment I want to share is a personal insight. I am a literacy specialist and when I first interviewed for CalServes the idea of working in teams with other mentors in a classroom scared me. So I played it safe and only let myself become a one on one tutor. Little did I know that for a large portion of my service I would be in situations where I would need to work with many children at one time as well as other mentors. I’m glad I completed my year of service the way I did, but if I were to do it again I would participate in as many activities as I could. Before CalServes I was content being an observer and allowed myself to miss experiences by lying low or ducking out altogether. Seeing the amount of growth achieved by other members and the relationships they have cultivated with their children makes me wish that I had taken better advantage of this unique learning and working opportunity. Don’t get me wrong, I feel like I’ve created special bonds that I will remember for the rest of my life, but I will admit I held back a lot during the year. Before I was happy just riding the waves and seeing where they carried me, now, I still plan on riding the waves, but I also will paddle and use my rudder to be an active part of whatever comes my way in life.

    Module 3
Module 3 is about bullying and ways to prevent it and tools that help kids deal with bullying situations. The module begins by talking about the effects of bullying and then explains different ways to approach the issue.
The first step to discourage bullying is to be aware of it. Next the teacher should be open about discussing it in the classroom. A good beginning exercise is the bullying survey. This is an effective tool because it shows the students who get bullied that they are not alone. It also serves the bullies by making them aware they are bullies while affording the opportunity to provide intervention for bullies so they may change their behavior.
There are other ways to set up the classroom to discourage bullying activities. This includes leading discussions in the class about bullying, it’s effects and ways to prevent it.
I really like the Aboriginal story about the Dreamtime. I think using folklore and stories to teach life’s lessons provide a nice change of pace from the traditional teaching methods that talk about direct actions and consequences. These, of course, are very valuable and serve an important role.
Often when people think about bullying they tend to focus on the physical incidents. This is important, but it’s only part of the equation. Bullying comes in different forms including physical bullying, verbal bullying and exclusion from activities.
I think it’s progressive that schools are now paying more attention to bullying. However, it’s possible to become hyper aware of the behavior and so as educators we must choose to respond to acts of bullying as separate incidents that are effected by their own history and environment.

    Module 2 Response

    1. Based on the classroom observations, my readings, and the web-research I have done I noticed that most of the ideas that Tribes presents are ideas that I would like to incorporate in a classroom. Having a classroom were the children can interact with each other, share ideas, and help each other is a great way for the children to learn the subject and look forward to learning. Having a classroom were is more likely to be student-centered the students feel like it they do have a voice in the classroom plus the students that are really shy can also speak up in the table they sit and maybe even share their opinion to the whole classroom. In the article “Developing an Educational Philosophy” by Rick Lavoie, there are three essential ideas that play a role in creating a personal philosophy.
Competitive Education according to Rick Lavoie is were cheating, jealousy and damaged self-concepts occur. Also were the success of a child depends on the failure of another, therefore putting the less competitive children in the bottom. Cooperative Education is the idea that interdependence and group work need to be emphasize therefore creating a caring, sharing and friendship atmosphere. Individualized Education those not depend in the failure or success of any child and only competes against his own performance.
He also describes how cooperation, fairness and work ethics also play a big role in deciding what your educational philosophy will be. As for me, while reading the article I identified more with the idea of the cooperative education process, but I also believe that there should be some sort of individualization. That way the kids could also know how to work by themselves and would not always be dependent on someone else. Although I believe some individualize education ideas should be apply, I strongly think that the best ideas and benefits are in the cooperative education system.

    2. Lavoie and Meechan incorporate some of the ideas found in the Tribes book. In the book Tribes they emphasize a lot the student-centered classroom setting. This type of classroom setting is the one that benefits the students the most. In the book Tribes I also read how is it that kid learn. There are different ways that children learn. Some learn by listening, others by reading and others visually. In the book they also talk about the nine intelligences: Vebal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, visual/spatial, body/kinesthetic,musical/rhythmic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, existential and naturalist. For a teacher learning how to apply most of these learning styles in her lessons could be a great challenge that will reward the children.

    Positive Discipline PT.2
2.What behavior systems had to go into effect prior to lesson execution in order that they be successful?

3.What conclusions can be drawn between a well planned, constructed, and/or tone set lesson, and classroom behavior?

4.How do you feel the Tribes process ties into the ideas discussed
    in the above three prompts?

    2. There were a few behavior systems that i saw to make this lesson execution a successful one. First i saw that all the students were well aware of what was expected. When he blew his whistle the kids new exactly what to do, (to freeze and listen to the following instructions). Also i noticed that students were very much well behaved, which not all students are, the teacher made it clear what was needed to be done, and had complete control from begining to end. All these came together and in the end had a very successful lesson in effect.

    3. The conclusion from a structered lesson planned from a tone set lesson planned, is have a lesson well planned out with a proffesonal setting. having your lesson planned in writing makes things more clear, and better way of executing your lesson planned to the class. once the student see that you have a clear way of presenting the lesson the better they can understand it and better way of them doing the lesson that is presented.

    4. Tibes tries to present the information threw text. They have multiple ways of showing the information. I feel that in tribes it is very helpful for me because I can read the information if i did not understand by watching the lesson come together. What tribes said is vey similar what i saw in the lesson planning video and articles that i read. Tribes also gave me ideas in which i could contribut with in my lesson planning.

Choose one of the online video lessons that you observed, as subject for analysis. What types of planning went into that lesson?

The online video I chose was the "Halving the class." This lesson was about how to mangage the class and have keep doing something instead of standing around talking to each other. The key for this lesson is to keep total control of your class room. At the beggining of the class the kids were running around and on his first wistle the kids froze and then give them a comand for example he used the toe-to-toe method which means that the kids would find the closest person and go toe-to-toe and freez. The next comand to seperate them evenly was to have one person in the pair touch his knee, the person touching his knee would then go to one side of the gym, the other would go on the other side of the gym. The types of planning which i think were used for this activity is having the kids work together, coperation. having them work with other people they have not worked with. I look forward in using this method for my sixth grade class.
